It's a small place to be

by Chubby Wolf

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

"It's a Small Place to Be" was the final Chubby Wolf album to be completed, and as of this date was the last in line to be published. As the second part of an intended 3-part series (first was "Turkey Decoy"), this was scheduled to be released on vinyl LP, but due to label funding and distributor hesitation, the release was cancelled altogether.

Fortissimo Records is proud to announce that 100 clear lilac vinyl records, with full color artwork and labels will be available for the first time, shipping 4/22/22.

The third part of the series "One or another - or let's call this 'In no particular order'" is yet to be released.

Thank you for your support of Chubby Wolf and the works of Danielle Baquet-Long.

about

I first became aware of Chubby Wolf's music when Turkey Decoy was released in the fall of 2011. The vinyl had received excellent reviews from boomkat, forced exposure and the like, plus I was immediately drawn to the strange name of the artist, as well as the photography and aesthetics of the vinyl overall. The front cover captures two young children, one of whom I presumed was chubby wolf herself, glaring endlessly at the audience, calm and still, somewhat mischievous looking, sat in an park, enveloped in the sun's rays forever. I find the choice of art particularly relevant to the sound Danielle Baquet created, because it has a quality which envelopes audiences in clouds of beautifully crafted choral tones, looping vocals, ambient feedbacking guitars, synthesizers harmonizing, constantly encouraging the listener to remain calm, relaxed, almost as if you are sitting in a park engulfed by the sun. While one might then be entranced, Chubby Wolf will mischievously bring in a sample of women discussing being covered in talcum powder, or somewhat unexpectedly introduce the sound of car tyres screeching, presumably before the start of a car accident.

I immediately began researching chubby wolf, finding out any information I could about this strange new ambient artist with the funny choice of names for songs and albums. Her real name was Danielle Baquet Long, Chubby Wolf was a dog, and she created her music in the sun drenched state of California. She was a founding member of the ambient group, Celer, together with her husband Will Long, who still releases music as Celer today. Sadly, she had passed away of heart failure in 2009, and so the Turkey Decoy release I was obsessed with listening to was a posthumous record. Will Long had continued the process of releasing her music on vinyl through the label digitalis, cassette, cdr and ultimately through channels such band camp, where she today receives a following. The time Turkey Decoy was released in 2011 was particularly important for me, because my first and only child had just been born in March 2011, and thus, it felt like the perfect music to play in the house while I was taking care of her. I bought everyone I knew this record for either birthdays or the holidays around this period. The music is soothing for the baby, for everyone, gorgeous, engulfing, humorous at times, skillful, beautiful and endless.

It is an honor to announce that 100 Clear Lilac Vinyl Records with full color art will be released by Fortissimo Records on 4/22/22.
